Mohawks,
Doc Martens and a Design Degree
Despite repeated warnings from the Design
Studies faculty about the hazardous nature of being a Designer
I ventured forth from the University of Otago armed with an Arts
Degree and an unswaying faith that I wouldn't be unemployed for
long...I was sort of right.
Where Design Studies saved me from becoming a failed architect,
the Internet came along at just the right time to save me from becoming
a failed print designer. I was never big on paper, was not a particularly
inspired illustrator but lived the Design Process and deep down
knew that the Web was the only way forward.
My first web site was a credit to my potential and after convincing
someone (who to his credit didn't laugh at my web site) to let me
work for free for 3 months I secured a position as a web designer...and
got better.
I now operate my working life as a cynically optimistic, senior
web designer responsible for my very own little area of stress.
As for the Mohawks?
Well, half way through University I discovered Punk, fully identified
with my malcontent side and realised that it was Society that was
messed up and not me. Always a good thing to learn. I still like
to mix it up in the mosh pit whenever a crankin' punk concert happens
along.
And the Docs?
I funded my education by working in a shoe factory making Doc Martens.
I worked my way up through the factory floor ranks from gluer of
soles to the lofty heights of organising the daily work flow. It
was an interesting experience and one I have become quite fond of
(I was always happy when working with the glue)...though I wouldn't
go back for anything.
